Understanding the Concept of Zodiac Signs

The Japanese zodiac signs consist of 12 animals, each corresponding to a specific year. For example, the year 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit. Your zodiac sign is determined by the year you were born.

The Presence of Zodiac Signs in Japanese Culture

For approximately 1,500 years, zodiac animals have been utilized in various ways within the daily lives of Japanese people. They have been used to indicate time and directions, for example. Noon is referred to as "the hour of the horse." Even today, conversations like "What zodiac sign are you?" and "This year, people born in the Year of the Rat have an unlucky year" are commonplace, deeply ingrained in Japanese culture.

The Mystique of Zodiac Signs and the Special Kanji Used

Zodiac signs in Japan are closely related to magic and divination. For instance, when ninjas unleash their techniques, they form various hand seals, each corresponding to a specific zodiac animal. Furthermore, due to their mystique, special kanji characters (Japanese ideographic characters) are employed to represent zodiac animals, which differ from the kanji commonly used in everyday life. For instance, the Ox is written as "牛" in kanji, but when representing the zodiac sign, it is written as "丑."

The Twelve Signs of the Japanese Zodiac

The Japanese zodiac(Junishi 十二支) is separated into 12 animals (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and wild boar), with one animal allocated to every year and a full cycle is repeated after 12 years. Junishi uses special Kanji(e.g. 子,丑,寅) that are different from the usual characters for each animal.

Those individuals born during a particular year were said to inherit some of the personalities of that year's animal and its zodiac charm is believed to bring good luck and fortune to its owner. Have a look below to see what animal you are.

Rat (子)

People born in the year of the Rat are charming, honest, ambitious, and have a tremendous capacity for pursuing a course to its end. They will work hard for their goals. They are easily angered but maintain an outward show of control.
