About the Japanese Zodiac & 10 Heavenly Stems
The Japanese Zodiac is a 60-year cycle based on a combination of 12 zodiac animals and 10 Heavenly Stems. Each combination is represented by two unique kanji characters (e.g., 甲寅).
Your zodiac combination corresponds to your birth year.
🔹 Historically used in calendars, timekeeping, directions, and fortune-telling.
🔹 Originated over 3,000 years ago in China and evolved uniquely in Japan (e.g., the pig became a boar).
🔹 In Japan, your zodiac animal is often seen as personally meaningful or symbolic.
🔹 Still widely seen in New Year’s cards, place names (e.g., Koshien Stadium), company names, historical events (e.g., Boshin War), shop decorations, and everyday conversations (like asking someone’s zodiac sign).
10 Heavenly Stems
Note: “Yang” represents active/strong energy, and “Yin” represents calm/soft energy.
Your zodiac combination corresponds to your birth year.
